The Honeymoon is Over

Inevitably they end, but this one has ended sooner than expected.

The latest Rasmussen poll shows that 29% of the nation's voters now strongly approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing as President. Thirty-six percent (36%) strongly disapprove. He has moved into negative territory because Independents have soured on the President and his agenda.

Only thirty-two percent (32%) now say the country is heading in the right direction, the lowest since February and down eight points from the 2009 peak.

Obama is walking back the promises he made about the new jobs that would be created by the stimulus bill. Moderate democratic Senators are flatly stating there won’t be another stimulus and Senator Mary Landrieu yesterday panned Obama’s health care plan, claiming he doesn’t have one.

Why are the moderates peeling off? Why are Independents going South?

The American public is getting more “change” than they voted for and Mr. Obama has misread his mandate. And had he been straightforward about what he planned to do the election would have been much closer than it was. He did not have a mandate to ration health care, run up 10 trillion dollar deficits, tax households making $250,000 into poverty, or impose carbon taxes that will stifle economic growth and increase the cost of living of every American. To boot, he has in six short months become overexposed. Too many press conferences. Too many speeches. Too many initiatives. Nearly all costing billions, if not trillions. Little wonder that those who work and earn a wage grab their billfold every time they see the President talking. Little wonder that moderate democrats who are up in 2010 are becoming uneasy about carrying Obama on their backs next year.

Will Obama slow it down? Not until he’s lost his filibuster-proof Senate and 30+ seats in the House. By then, it will be too late to turn back the clock.
